Interior painting

Interior painters and decorators for London homes

Interior painting in London is most of what we do: bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, hallways and whole houses, painted by the same small team from the first visit to the final walk-round. Our interior painters work in Victorian and Edwardian terraces, mansion flats and new-build homes, and every job starts with a free visit and colour advice.

A lasting finish is mostly preparation. Before any colour goes on we fill cracks and dents, sand every surface, wash down greasy walls, seal water and smoke stains and mist-coat bare plaster. Then we apply two full coats and cut in by hand, so the lines at ceilings, skirting and sockets are crisp without masking tape. It is the difference between interior house painting that looks good for a few months and a finish that still looks sharp years later. We work across Richmond, Chelsea, Fulham, Wimbledon and the rest of south-west and west London.

  • Radiators and windows

Radiators, window boards and sash windows painted inside, still opening freely.

Woodwork and staircases

Woodwork painting, hallways and staircases

Woodwork is where an interior decorator’s skill shows. We sand back to a sound surface, fill dents and open joints, knot and prime bare timber, then lay off every coat along the grain so doors, skirting and banisters look smooth rather than brushy. We use water-based satin and eggshell that stays bright white instead of yellowing, or oil-based finishes where the existing paint calls for it.

Hallways, stairs and landings are the hardest-working rooms in the house and the trickiest to reach, so we bring stair platforms and tower scaffolds to paint high walls and ceilings safely, and finish the spindles, strings and handrails by hand.

Our process

How our interior painters work

The same six steps on every room, so the finish is right first time.

  1. Visit, colours and quote

A free visit, colour and finish advice, and a written, fixed price within two working days.

  2. Protect the room

Floors sheeted, furniture moved and wrapped, and switches and fittings masked or removed.

  3. Repair and fill

Cracks, holes and dents filled; larger plaster repairs done by our own plasterers.

  4. Sand, seal and prime

Dust-free sanding, stains sealed and bare plaster or timber mist-coated or primed.

  5. Two finish coats

Ceilings first, then walls, then woodwork, all cut in by hand for crisp lines.

  6. Clean up and walk-round

Furniture back, a full clean and a final check with you before we leave.

Paints and finishes

The right paint and finish for every room

Choosing colours is the hardest part for most clients, so every quote includes a free colour consultation. We look at the light in each room, suggest colours and sheens, and paint large sample patches so you can see them in the morning and the evening. We are just as happy to follow a scheme from your interior designer.

Premium paints

Matt and washable matt
A flat, chalky finish for living rooms and bedrooms; a wipeable one for hallways and children’s rooms.

Hard-wearing sheens for kitchens, bathrooms, woodwork and radiators.
Low-odour and breathable
Water-based, low-VOC paints as standard, and mineral paints on lime plaster in period homes.

FAQ

Interior painting questions

How much does interior painting cost in London?

As a guide, a double bedroom costs from £600 to £900 and a living room from £800 to £1,200, including preparation, premium paint and two coats on the walls, ceiling and woodwork. A hallway, stairs and landing usually costs from £1,500 to £2,800, and the inside of a three-bedroom house from £5,000 to £9,000. We visit for free and give you a written, fixed-price quote. See our guide to painter and decorator prices.

How long does it take to paint a room?

Most bedrooms take two to three days and a living room two to four, which allows for filling, sanding, a mist coat on any new plaster and drying time between coats. A hallway, stairs and landing takes three to five days and the inside of a whole house two to four weeks. Your quote includes a start date and a day-by-day plan.

How many coats of paint do walls and ceilings need?

Two full finish coats as standard, so the colour is even and the finish hard-wearing. Bare or newly plastered walls first get a mist coat (a thinned first coat) so the paint bonds, and a strong colour change or a dark colour can need a third. We never water down finish coats to make them go further.

Do you paint ceilings, woodwork and radiators too?

Yes. Ceilings, cornices, doors, frames, skirting, architraves, window boards, staircases and radiators are all part of interior painting. Woodwork is sanded, filled and primed where needed, then finished in a water-based satin or eggshell that stays white instead of yellowing.

Which paint finish is best for each room?

A flat or durable matt for living rooms and bedrooms, a washable matt or eggshell for hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms, and a moisture-resistant paint in bathrooms. Ceilings are usually flat matt, and woodwork satin or eggshell. Read our guide to choosing the right paint finish.

Can we stay at home while you paint the inside of the house?

Yes, nearly all of our interior painting is in lived-in homes. We work room by room, keep the kitchen and a bathroom usable, use low-odour water-based paints and tidy up every evening. Most clients keep living at home, and rooms are usually back in use the day after the last coat.

Do I need to move the furniture before you start?

No. We move furniture to the middle of the room, wrap it in dust sheets and polythene and put it back when we finish. We just ask you to take down pictures and put away ornaments and anything fragile or valuable.

Can you repair cracks and damaged plaster before painting?

Yes. Filling hairline cracks, nail holes and dents is part of every job. Larger cracks, blown plaster and badly damaged walls are repaired or skimmed by our own plasterers, so you do not need a separate trade, and Artex ceilings can be skimmed smooth before we paint.

Is your interior painting guaranteed?

Yes. Every interior painting job comes with our two-year workmanship guarantee. If anything we have painted peels, cracks or flakes because of our work in that time, we come back and put it right free of charge.
