Specialist wallpapering

Wallpapering in London for designer and high-value papers

A designer wallpaper can cost hundreds of pounds a roll, and a hand-painted panel far more. One badly cut drop, a seam that opens or paste on the face of a silk is money lost, and often a paper that cannot be reordered. That is why our wallpapering in London is done by specialist hangers, not general decorators who hang paper now and then.

We hang for homeowners who want a room done properly the first time, and for interior designers who need a wallpaper hanger they can send to a client’s house with confidence. We work with papers from makers such as Cole & Son, de Gournay, Zuber, Morris & Co and Farrow & Ball, read every manufacturer’s instructions before we start, and treat your rolls with the care they cost. Every wallpaper installation starts with a free visit to check the walls and measure up.

Wallpaper types

The wallpapers we hang

From a single feature wall to whole houses, in every kind of paper.

  • Lining paper

Hung under fine papers, or cross-lined, to give a smooth, stable base.

  • Designer wallpapers

Hand-printed and high-value papers, hung to the maker’s instructions.

  • Murals and panoramics

Set out panel by panel so the image lines up across the whole wall.

  • Grasscloth and natural fibres

Grasscloth, sisal and cork, kept clean of paste and carefully sequenced.

  • Fabric-backed and silk papers

Silks, linens and fabric-backed vinyls hung with paste-free faces.

  • Feature walls

A chimney breast, a bed wall or a stair wall, centred on its focal point.

Preparation

How we prepare walls for wallpaper

Wallpaper shows every flaw underneath it, so the base matters as much as the hanging. Read more in our guide to preparing walls for wallpaper.

  1. Stripping

Old paper steamed off without gouging the plaster, and any residue washed away.

  2. Wall repairs

Cracks and holes filled and sanded, and loose or blown plaster repaired.

  3. Lining

Lining paper hung, cross-lined under fine papers, so the finish sits on a smooth, even base.

  4. Sizing

Walls sealed with size or primer, so the paper slides into place and stays put.

  5. Setting out

Plumb lines marked and every drop planned before a single roll is cut.

Pattern matching and finish

Precise seams, aligned patterns and careful handling

Most of the skill in hanging wallpaper happens before the paste goes on. We plan where the pattern falls on each wall, so it is centred where the eye lands and the last drop meets the first somewhere discreet, such as behind a door.

Seam precision
Butt-joined, lightly rolled seams that close up as the paper dries.
Pattern alignment
Motifs centred on chimney breasts and matched across every drop.
Batch and shade checks
Every roll checked for batch, shade and faults before it is cut.
Care with costly rolls
Clean benches, measured cuts and offcuts kept for future repairs.

FAQ

Wallpaper hanging questions

How much does wallpapering a room cost in London?

As a guide, a feature wall in a standard paper costs from £250 to £400, and all four walls of a bedroom from £650 to £1,100. Grasscloth, silk and other specialist papers are usually priced per roll hung, from £45 to £70 a roll, and stripping old paper adds £120 to £300 a room. Murals and hand-printed panels are priced once we have seen the walls and the paper. Ask for a quote and we will measure up for free.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

It depends on the height and width of the walls, the doors and windows, and above all the pattern repeat: a large repeat can need a third more paper than a plain design. We measure during our visit and tell you exactly how many rolls to order, plus one spare from the same batch for future repairs.

Can I supply my own wallpaper?

Yes, most of our clients and interior designers choose and buy their own paper, and we hang it. We check every roll on delivery for batch numbers, shade and damage before anything is cut, so any problem goes back to the supplier rather than onto your wall. We can also recommend suppliers and order the paper for you.

How long does it take to wallpaper a room?

A feature wall usually takes a day, and a bedroom two to three days including preparation. Lining paper adds a day, as it needs to dry before the finish paper goes on. Murals and delicate papers such as grasscloth and silk take longer, because every drop is set out and hung with extra care.

Can you hang wallpaper on newly plastered walls?

Yes, once the plaster is fully dry, which normally takes two to four weeks. We seal it with a size or primer first, so the paper slides into place while hanging and comes off cleanly when you next redecorate. Our plasterers can also prepare the walls for you.

Will the seams show on grasscloth?

Grasscloth is made from natural fibres, so slight colour changes between drops are part of its character and every maker warns about them. We minimise them by checking the rolls, reversing alternate drops where the maker recommends it and planning the order so the closest-matching drops sit side by side on the main wall.
